Fulbright in Laos.
Who Am I?
Sabadii! My name is Mysee and I will be blogging about my experience as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in Laos. I'm from Minnesota, a proud graduate from St. Catherine University (St. Paul, MN).I majored in Women's Studies and minored in Sociology. I feel very blessed to have this opportunity. My study abroad experience in India introduced me to the field of international development; I'm hoping this experience will help me to deepen my knowledge of this field. I'm also excited to be learning about Southeast Asia because I know very little about this part of the world.
Before this, I spent a year as an Americorp Promise Fellow at the Women's Initiative for Self Empowerment (WISE) running the Girls Getting Ahead in Leadership program. You can read more about this here.
What Am I Doing?
From July 2014- July 2015, I will be in Savannakhet, Laos teaching English at the university. Besides teaching English in Savannakhet, I hope to spend my time learning Lao (the language) and volunteering so that I can better understand Lao culture and people. I strongly believe in cross cultural understanding and feel that this is the path to addressing issues of disparities in our global world.
Why Laos?
I chose to do my Fulbright fellowship in Laos because of my research interest in Southeast Asian studies, international development, and because Laos is my parent's homeland. As the daughter of Hmong refugees, I've grown up hearing about Laos my entire life but have never had the opportunity to see it for myself. You can read more about what this journey means to me as a Hmong-American here.
As I embark on this journey my mantra is "embracing the unexpected" because I really don't know what to expect. Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a planner, a mico-manager; I like to have control over every little thing. Going to Laos, I have no idea or no control over what will happen. So I'm going to work on being open minded and embracing the unexpected. I hope that this blog will help me to document my journey, reflect on its meaning, and help me stay connected to all my loved ones in the US.
